Church Wedding
A catholic practise. 

  • One of the newly-weds must be baptized or confirmed by the catholic religion.
  • The priest can not officiate outside of a catholic church.
  • A 6 month to a 1 year reservation is required.
  • The "publication des bans" is a wedding formality which will be up where your wedding is gonna be. Every parish choose the moment of publication but the law request that it must be 20 days before the wedding.
  • If one of the newly-weds comes from another parish, he must have a signed permission to wed.
  • priest prepares the wedding file and sends it to the civil state director.
  • Wedding courses might be obligatory.

The best solution would be to contact the parish where you decided to celebrate your wedding.


Civil wedding
It is usually officiate by a clerk or by a clerk of the "cour supérieur du Québec". Elected members, municipal officers and notarys have the same powers. Someone chose by the newly-weds can officiate if he is acknowleged by the civil state director.

  • The wedding can be outside of law courts. Please contact "direction des communications du ministère de la justice" for details.
  • The newly-weds must obtain the wedding form from the law courts and fill it before taking an appointment with the clerk or the one chose to officiate the celebration.
  • The newly-weds must bring all the papers related to their civic marriage.
  • The "publication des bans" must be up 20 days before the wedding.
  • 260 $ will be needed at the interview.The witnesses have to be there too.
  • This amount is for the celebration. If the weddind is outside the law courts, expect additional fees for who will officiate the wedding.

Civil marriage
Civil marriage is in some ways different from a civil wedding.

  • The newly-weds are of the same sex.
  • To be broken, a simple audience with a notary is required. It is important that no kids interfere with the decision and both of the persons involved must agree with the decision.
  • Fiscality, work accident and inheritance are the same as a civic wedding.
  • This marriage include free family mediation.
  • The price is the same.
